OGYAKARTA: Members of Earth Hour Jogja recently got together to celebrate green activism in the city of Yogyakarta.
This event, held at the Dagadu Djokdja Yogyatorium in Yogyakarta after Earth Hour's March 29 worldwide 'switch-off', featured the attendance of a number of local community groups joining Earth Hour Jogja to share ideas on how to better promote environmental sustainability. It also was designed to popularize local efforts to increase environmental consciousness.
Art displays at the gathering promoted the use of recycled paper. Performing bands used energy-saving acoustic instruments. Later on, members of Earth Hour Jogja also encouraged visitors to exchange their plastic bags for reusable bags. The group expressed hopes that promoting the use of reusable merchandise can inspire people to use less non-biodegradable items like plastic bags.
'We hope that the public can realize how minor daily things can have a big effect on environmental wellbeing,' the event's chief organizer Dhia told kanaltigapuluh.info.
Aside from these public activities, Earth Hour Jogja also conducted similar projects on the Internet and social media, reminding members of the public to better manage waste and to be more frugal in using resources like tissue and paper.
