Air Force urged to probe child molestation

T

he North Sumatra branch of the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) has urged the Air Force'€™s internal affairs division to thoroughly investigate the alleged molestation of an 18-month-old girl by her father, a warrant officer.

North Sumatra KPAI head Zahrin Piliang said the commission was coordinating with the Air Force'€™s internal affairs chief at Soewondo Air Base in Medan in investigating the case, in which a member of the Air Force'€™s National Air Defense Command in Medan, North Sumatra, has been implicated.

However, Zahrin claimed the commission had yet to receive details of the investigation. According to Zahrin, the Air Force was authorized to investigate the case because it involved a warrant officer.

'€œWe have coordinated with the Air Force so that the case of alleged molestation involving a non-commissioned officer could immediately be resolved,'€ Zahrin told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.

Zahrin said the case came to the commission'€™s attention after the warrant officer'€™s wife filed a report with it last week.

According to Zahrin, the wife also reported the case to the Air Force'€™s internal affairs division and the
police.

'€œWe will oversee the case until the end. We hope the case will be resolved immediately and transparently. Should the concerned person be proven guilty, he must be punished, otherwise his good name must be restored,'€ said Zahrin.

When contacted, the Air Force'€™s internal affairs commander at Soewondo Air Base, Maj. Andi Sultan Ilyas, said the case was still being investigated.

He added that nine people had been questioned in connection to the case. Andi said during questioning, the warrant officer had denied molesting his daughter.

'€œWe are processing the case. We have examined nine people, including MYK [the suspect], but none of them have been named a suspect yet due to a lack of evidence,'€ Andi told the media at the Air Force office at the Soewondo Air Base.

Andi said the internal affairs division would conduct a series of psychological tests on the suspect and his wife. He added that the results of the tests would be used to support the investigation.

The wife reported her husband to the internal affairs division last week because she believed he had molested their daughter.

She said she had become aware of the matter after her daughter returned home crying after a day out with her father on March 22. She claimed that she and her husband were in the process of getting a divorce.

The woman she did not wish to see her husband incarcerated or tarnish the image of the Air Force, but she wanted justice for her daughter.

'€œI want this case resolved as fairly as possible and the perpetrator punished accordingly,'€ she said.
