Police in dark over suspected pedophile teacher, says police chief

N

ational Police chief Gen.Sutarman acknowledges the police have never received a report on William JamesVahey, the suspected child molester who taught at Jakarta International School(JIS), prior to a recent rape case that emerged involving a six-year-oldkindergarten student.

Sutarman said no report had been filed under the name of 64-year-old Vahey, who committed suicide last month while being investigated by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

'€œNo, there was no such report. [Sexual assaults] may have been committed some time ago, but now he has committed suicide if I am not mistaken,'€ Sutarman said as quoted by kompas.com on Thursday.

He added that cooperation between the FBI and the Indonesian police was being conducted through Interpol. Therefore, he went on, the Indonesian police would assist with any arrest request made by the FBI via Interpol and vice versa.

Sutarman suggested it was time for the government to reevaluate its policy on foreign teachers. He acknowledged that the international school environment was '€œunreachable'€.

'€œWe can gain access only if a crime occurs there,'€ he said.

Commenting on foreign teachers, the Education and Culture Ministry said it seldom scrutinized their social backgrounds and only focused on their professional profiles.

'€œSocial profiles are never our priority,'€ ministry spokesman Ibnu Hamad said as quoted by Antara news agency. (put/dic)
