isgraced former Constitutional Court chief justice Akil Mochtar, who stands accused of acquiring Rp 57 billion (US$4.9 million) from rigging 10 elections, admitted to meeting Banten Governor Ratu Atut Chosiyah in Singapore where he said the latter had asked him to rig three elections in her province.
'There were three local elections: Lebak regency, Tangerang city and Serang regency. Atut asked whether I could help on the three elections,' Akil said during a trial at the Jakarta Corruption Court on Thursday.
He claimed the meeting was accidental.
'I did not give any answer [to Atut] at that time because I first had to check the cases,' Akil said, adding that he went to Singapore for a medical checkup, not to discuss election disputes with Atut, although the court proved that the two, together with Atut's brother Tubagus Chaeri 'Wawan' Wardana, had watched the Formula 1 race in Singapore.
Wawan and Atut have been charged in the case for allegedly bribing Akil in return for a favorable ruling in a local election dispute for Lebak regency.
Akil said that he had 'jokingly' asked Atut for Rp 3 billion through middle man Susi Tur Andayani, who has also been charged in the case, for him to rule in favor of particular candidates in the Banten election.
'Susi phoned me and asked my help for Lebak regency. I told her that Atut had previously asked me to rule in favor of particular candidates in Serang, Tangerang and Lebak, and that if Atut wanted my help just provide Rp 3 billion for the three elections. It was actually a joke because the court had already passed rulings,' Akil said.
