Bus plunge kills four, including police officer

t least four people died and several others were injured after an inter-city bus lost control and plunged into the Cadas River in Tangerang early Thursday morning.

The accident happened at around 2 a.m. when the bus, from company Putri Jaya, ran a red light at high speed on Jl. Arya Kemuning in Tangerang city and crashed into a police traffic checkpoint before careening into the shallow river.

Head of the accident unit at the Tangerang traffic police department, Adj. Comr. Rinaldi, said in addition to hitting and killing one of the police officers in the checkpoint, the speeding bus also hit and killed a motorcyclist.

The four fatalities were bus passenger Markamah, the motorcyclist Ilhamudi, bus driver Maryadi and a police officer, Second Brig. Abdul Mustajib.

A witness at the scene, Iyoh, said that the bus crashed into the group of traffic police officers stopping vehicles to check documents before it crashed through the guardrail above the river.

Another witness, Yoyo, was quoted as saying by Antara news agency that the bus appeared to be trying to avoid the police checkpoint.

The bus was serving the Pekalongan, Central Java-Tangerang route.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, a trailer truck transporting vans lost control and ran onto a sidewalk and crashed into a construction site in Cakung, East Jakarta.

The truck driver'€™s assistant, Juned, said as quoted by tribunnews.com that the driver was forced to swerve because of a motorcycle.

'€œThe motorcycle was speeding, trying to pass on the left, and surprised the driver, who immediately hit the brakes. We ran onto the sidewalk and was almost flipped,'€ Juned said.

The driver, Samad, is in the hospital after having sustained serious injuries in the crash.

Also on Wednesday, a crane toppled into a ditch on Jl. Lebak Bulus I, Cilandak, South Jakarta, creating heavy traffic in the area.
