ndustry Minister Mohamad Suleman Hidayat opened the 2014 Shoes, Leather and Fashion Exhibition at the Jakarta Convention Center on Wednesday in a bid to boost the county's textile industry.
"I appreciate all associations that have been great partners to the government in developing the nation's textile and shoe industry," Hidayat said in Jakarta on Wednesday on the sidelines of the exhibition opening, as quoted by Antara news agency.
According to ministry data, the export value of textile products and shoes reached US$12.68 billion and $3.86 billion, respectively, in 2013.
"Besides the huge export value, the annual surplus from textile products in the trade balance has been about $4.5 billion in the past five years, while shoes reached $2 billion," he said.
He said textiles and shoes were the main commodities of the manufacturing industry as they both absorbed a lot of manpower. In addition to meeting domestic demand for shoes and clothes, they contribute significantly to the country's income, he added.
The exhibition runs through May 31 and involves 168 exhibitors.(nfo)
