wo Cabinet ministers have requested President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono grant them temporary leaves of absence in order to join campaigning for the July presidential election.
According to State Secretary Sudi Silalahi, as reported by tribunnews.com, Forestry Minister Zulkifli Hasan and Manpower and Transmigration Minister Muhaimin Iskandar had submitted the requests.
'The two ministers submitted their requests [to the President] via me. So far, only these two have requested leaves of absence; other ministers have not,' Sudi said on Monday.
Previously, Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) recorded that 10 ministers were officially enrolled on the campaign teams of presidential candidate pairs Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo-Jusuf Kalla and Prabowo Subianto-Hatta Rajasa.
According to Government Regulation No. 18/2013 on leave of absence requirements, government officials may request temporary leave 12 days before they start campaigning, while the decision to grant leave is given four days before the leave is taken.
Last Wednesday, it was reported that two ministers from the Golkar Party, namely Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sharif Cicip Sutardjo and Coordinating People's Welfare Minister Agung Laksono, had said they would not be seeking temporary leave as they were only acting as advisers to the presidential candidates rather than actively campaigning.
Yudhoyono requested last Tuesday that those ministers busy helping with campaigns should seek temporary leave from the Cabinet. He added, however, that ministers limiting their campaign activities to the weekends did not need to request a leave of absence.
The ministers helping the Prabowo-Hatta campaign team are Zulkifli, Agung, Cicip, Industry Minister MS Hidayat, Administrative Reforms Minister Azwar Abubakar, Social Affairs Minister Salim Segaf Al Jufri and Public Housing Minister Djan Faridz.
Meanwhile, the ministers supporting the Jokowi-Kalla ticket are Muhaimin, Disadvantaged Regions Minister Ahmad Helmy Faisal Zaini and State-Owned Enterprises Minister Dahlan Iskan. (fss)
