Issue of the day: KPK seeks life sentence for arrogant Akil

ifty-three-year-old Akil Mochtar could spend the rest of his life behind bars if the Jakarta Corruption Court meets the demand made by Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutors, who are seeking such punishment for the disgraced former Constitutional Court (MK) chief justice for his role in corruption and money laundering offenses.

Mochtar'€™s statement: '€œA breach of ethics.'€ Could somebody buy him a dictionary as he doesn'€™t even understand the meaning of the word!

It is of significant concern that most Indonesians have no comprehension whatsoever of the ramifications of '€œmeddling'€ with the Constitution.

These are the type of crimes that bring down governments and shake the sheer foundations of society. In all my years in Indonesia this is undoubtedly the worst case of corruption I have ever seen.

I truly hope he gets his just dues in prison with a near death bashing or even worse!

I am convinced that most Indonesians at large have absolutely no idea as to the significance of this impropriety or the ramifications of this crime.

Personally, I am quite sure that in many countries '€œtampering'€ with the Constitution would nigh on constitute treason.

It'€™s not just corruption and money laundering involved in this case. It is the destruction of the institution of the Constitutional Court and the betrayal of the trust of the public in this sacred institutional set up to protect the nation'€™s constitution! A life sentence is appropriate as the impact of the crime is tantamount to an act of treason!

Malam

Put this traitor away forever!

Balistars

I hurt my jaw every time I read this about this case.

Strip him of his wealth and build thousands of schools with it, or something! That proves how corrupted he is, he doesn'€™t know he'€™s in the wrong.

Akil previously said he was safe from the death penalty (unlike in China).

This sounds to me that the death penalty has a very strong deterrent effect on corruption!

It should/must apply! The death sentence should be mandatory in cases where the amount taken illegally exceeds 10 or 20 times
the declared annual income of the defendant'€™s last 10 or 20 years tax payments.

Defendants should be allowed to make restitution and, therefore, lessen the amount recorded as
illegal.

This will bring into the national coffers the much needed cash and give the defendants, who are remorseful enough to own up and pay back the money they took, a shortcut to heaven!

'€œAkil slams KPK as '€˜unethical'€™.'€

He'€™s absolutely right! It'€™s quite unethical for a court to fail to consider giving corruptors the death sentence!

Terry McAsee

Based on facts presented at court, you are guilty as the prosecutor can demand death sentence, which is in line with the desire of the general public.

And here I thought he was an expert in unethical behavior: so disappointed.
