he Jakarta Police have arrested six men, one of whom is underage, for robbery and sexual harassment, according to spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto.
He told reporters on Friday that the six men, who allegedly robbed a 23-year-old woman earlier this month near Pondok Indah, South Jakarta, were arrested last week.
According to Rikwanto, the woman was traveling in a car with her boyfriend when a dispute between them prompted her to get out of the car on Jl. Iskandaryah in Kebayoran Lama, South Jakarta, at around 2 a.m.
'She was looking for a taxi to go home. One of the suspects pretended to help her and offered her a motorcycle ride,' he said.
The unsuspecting woman agreed and got on the motorcycle. The suspect then allegedly signaled to his accomplices to follow after him.
Rikwanto said that the suspect then took her to Tanah Kusir Cemetery in South Jakarta instead, where his five accomplices were waiting.
Allegedly, the six of them then held her down and took all of her belongings, including her wallet and her cellular phone.
'They also tried to rape her, but she fought back and screamed, which attracted local residents' attention,' Rikwanto said.
Some residents heard the woman's scream, but when they rushed over to help her the six men fled.
Rikwanto said the men had already ripped her pants and shirt.
According to Rikwanto, the six men were identified as 21-year-old JR, the alleged motorcycle driver; 22-year-old DI, who allegedly held her down; 20-year-old AN, who is accused of ripping open her clothes; and 19-year-old RAI and 20-year-old APA, who secured her belongings. A 15-year-old boy allegedly acted as lookout. APA and the 15-year-old are siblings.
'The six live together in a rented room on Jl. Peninggaran Barat in South Jakarta,' Rikwanto added.
Although the six suspects said that this was their first robbery attempt, Rikwanto said that their sophisticated coordination suggested that they were not amateur criminals.
'We suspect that they have done this more than once. We are still looking into it,' he said.
Currently, five suspects are in custody of the police while the underage suspect is in the custody of his parents. (dwa)
