Persib buoyant after Barcelona workshop

S

occer club Persib Bandung is confident that the recent coaching clinic by Spanish club FC Barcelona will elevate its junior team'€™s performance.

'€œWe have learned a lot about how a soccer team can gain support from big companies, which will hopefully be a model for other clubs,'€ director of PT Persib Bandung Bermartabat, Farhan, said.

'€œWe are becoming more confident with the implementation of sports science in our training method, a common practice abroad. We hope our players can be mentally strong and hone their sporting values,'€ he said.

The Barcelona coaching team comprised FCB Escola International Project coordinator Antoni Claveria Mayol and FCB Escola South Korea Project coordinator Javier Mondelo Rodenas.

The coaching clinic was given to Persib'€™s under-21 players on Tuesday and Wednesday.

'€œFirst, we told them why and what we are to them and then we talked about technique, formation, methodology and how to deal with the players,'€ Mayol said before the start of the workshop.

Persib Bandung was chosen through a fan poll held by Head&Shoulders on its Facebook fan page. Persib gained support from 33,000 of the page'€™s100,000 fans.

Senior communication manager P&G ASEAN, Junita Kartikasari, said the competition had been inspired by FC Barcelona'€™s success. P&G was interested in exposing Indonesian players to the training method used by this world-class caliber team.

'€œThat'€™s why we chose a local club rather than the national team, because a national team means nothing if there are no strong players at the local level,'€ Junita said.

Mayol said the training focused on respect for other players as well as respect for the coach.

'€œIt'€™s a team sport. So respect is extremely important,'€ he said.

Persib'€™s under-21 team, now under Brazilian coach Jaino Matos, failed to qualify for the 2014-2015 season after only winning two of its six matches.

Mayol hoped that the coaching clinic would develop the team'€™s potential.

'€œThe important thing is how they make decisions on the field [...] to react and make the best decision,'€ he said.
