An earthquake measuring magnitude 5 on the Richter Scale jolted Ternate, the capital city of North Maluku province, on Sunday.
Head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency at Patimura station in Ambon, George Mahubessy, said the epicenter was 10 kilometers beneath the sea, about 125 km northwest of Ternate.
'It had no potential to create a tsunami,' Mahubessy said as quoted by Antara news agency.
He said North Maluku was prone to seismic activity as it was located at the meeting point of the Pacific, Indo-Australia and Eurasia tectonic plates.
