Campaign promises made by presidential candidates Prabowo Subianto and rival Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo on Tuesday again demonstrated the sharp contrast between the two.

Prabowo was campaigning in East Java, while Jokowi made stops in Jambi and Palembang in Sumatra. Appearing to have run out of other sweeping campaign promises, Prabowo attempted to capitalize on the nation'€™s soccer fever by pledging to make Indonesia the host of the World Cup.

Other recent promises from the former general have included setting a national minimum wage of Rp 6 million (US$500) '€” the current minimum wage in every province except Jakarta is below Rp 2 million '€” and giving Rp 1 billion each year to the more than 72,000 villages across the country.

In German they say leicht gesagt, schwer getan, which translates to '€œwe'€™re bored of promises made based on events not even related to the core problem of Indonesian people in general'€.

The only way an Indonesian athlete is going to get to the World Cup is if he changes his citizenship and plays for another team.

There are so many great players here, but with no real government support, inadequate private support, the absence of any quality parks or practice areas and a lack of professional coaches and trainers, it'€™s just not going o happen.

How about a badminton world cup? Now that might work.

Instead of promising to host the world cup Prabowo should focus on making sure players get paid in Indonesia'€™s own national soccer league.

Deddy K

If you host the cup, then you automatically qualify to compete in it!

This is smart thinking by Prabowo. What vision he has!

Loro Blonyo

Yes Indonesia will host a World Cup, but it will burden all citizens!

It'€™s kind of like buying expensive clothes only to die in them because you haven'€™t saved any money to
buy food.

This makes clear the differences in what each candidate is prepared to propose to the people.

We have to determine which proposal is realistic and which is not.

There are indeed many talented soccer players in Indonesia.

However, their skills are not developed under the current Indonesian soccer league, which is corrupt and crippled by petty interests.

Also, if the Indonesian national team wants to compete on the international level, it has to get rid of incompetent coaches and hire international-level coaches instead.

Jan Karl

It would be best to seriously focus on developing a national team that can compete at the top level, because it may be a few decades before there is a realistic chance of Indonesia hosting the World Cup.
