Indonesia, which has long supported the Palestinian struggle for independence, needs to work harder to help Palestinians fulfill their dream during the next presidency, a former special envoy to the Middle East said.
'We need to take more assertive steps, instead of just waiting,' said Alwi Shihab, who was also a former foreign minister during the presidency of Abdurrahman 'Gus Dur' Wahid, on Friday.

With due respect, perhaps we should prioritize efforts in Indonesia to secure peaceful co-existence between Muslims, Christians and other minorities (like Shiites and Ahmadis).
As a nation, we can only do so much, so let us resolve our own problems first before trying to settle a 2000-year-old issue in Palestine.

Any efforts to take the lead in international dispute solving will be immediately undermined by the government's refusal to ensure religious freedom at home. For as long as minorities are discriminated against at home, Indonesia's voice will not be taken seriously abroad.
