he main market in the Seririt district of Buleleng regency in north Bali, one of the largest traditional markets in the area, was engulfed in flames at the weekend causing estimated damage of between Rp 17 to Rp 18 billion (US$1.43-$1.5 million).
The market, which had 1,200 kiosks, accommodated small- and medium-scale traders with an overall daily turnover of almost Rp 2 billion.
Made Suwena, head of the market management, told Bali Daily that the fire was a tremendous blow to all traders at the market. 'They are very shocked and feel hopeless. Their businesses were their livelihood. It has also disrupted the regency's economic activity,' said Suwena.
Seririt, located on the north coast between Jembrana regency in west Bali and Buleleng regency in north Bali, is an important part of the distribution route between Java and Bali.
'I have lost all hope. I don't know how my family and I can cope with this disaster,' a female trader wept.
