residentSusilo Bambang Yudhoyono dismissed Karo Regent Kena Ukur Surbakti on Friday dueto uncertainty over his educational diplomas as well as the repeated postponementof the Mt. Sinabung evacuee relocation program.

"What did I do wrong? The dismissal decree did not give a reason for my dismissal," he said at the North Sumatra governor's office in Medan, adding that he would question Yudhoyono in person about the decision.

The Karo Legislative Council (DPRD) officially dismissed Kena Ukur after 31 of the 35 Karo DPRD members agreed to the dismissal in March.

Karo councilor Siti Aminah Perangin-Angin said that Kena Ukur's dismissal was originally proposed in 2013. The Karo DPRD finally decided to dismiss him after deeming him unethical for selling and buying positions at the Karo regional government, creating policies without the agreement of the Karo DPRD and failing to lead the Karo community, especially in the case of Mount Sinabung.

North Sumatra Governor Gatot Pujo Nugroho asked all parties to remain calm after his dismissal and not to overreact to the move.

Gatot explained that according to Law No.32/2004 on regional government and a letter from the home minister, Deputy Regent Karo Terkelin Brahmana would take over from Kena Ukur, who would face a hearing at the Karo DPRD. (fss)
