he Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), eastern Indonesia chapter, is urging the new Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo administration to pay close attention to the need to accelerate infrastructure development in eastern Indonesia.
Kadin deputy chairman for eastern Indonesia coordinating division, Annar Salahuddin Sampetoding, said in Jakarta on Thursday that many issues had not yet been handed over to local administrations, despite regional autonomy.
'Up until now we can still find many ambiguous terminologies, such as whether roads are state roads or provincial roads. It's not clear who is responsible for the management of those kinds of roads. If the roads are located in areas belonging to certain regional administrations, it should be the administrations holding the authority to manage the roads,' said Annar, as quoted by Antara news agency.
He said such lack of clarity has hampered infrastructure development in eastern Indonesia and it was hoped that the Jokowi administration could resolve the problem.
Annar went on to say that road, port and airport developments in eastern Indonesian regions have not yet been run as well as the ones on Java. He said he hoped economic well-being could be more evenly distributed so that infrastructure development could proceed faster, based on the implementation of the Master Plan for the Acceleration and Expansion of the Indonesian Economy (MP3EI) initiated by the government.
'We want that the MP3EI can be implemented as well as possible,' said Annar.
He said Jokowi could be a new hope for developing business in Indonesia. Kadin wanted the new administration to separate political and economic matters and have them managed by professional people.
Annar said he also hoped the new administration could fulfill the current administration's commitment to reduce obstacles In businesses.
'Both Jokowi and [vice president-elect Jusuf] Kalla are entrepreneurs who have a high capacity in business. They have expertise in the field and in what becoming a businessman feels like. We are optimistic that they could slash obstacles hampering the business sector,' said Annar. (hak/ebf)
