t least 283 illegal immigrants are being held at Medan'sImmigration Detention Center in Belawan, North Sumatra, for not having officialpassports.
Purbanus Sinaga, head of the detention center, said the immigrants were from various countries, including Somalia, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Palestine and Sudan.
'Most of them violate the immigration act by not having passports,' he said, as quoted by Antara news agency.
'Every month, there is always a foreigner with no passport being taken to the center by the police or immigration officers,' he said.
Most of the detained are from Somalia, Myanmar and Sri Lanka. 'They run for refuge because their countries are in tumultuous and critical states,' he said. (hak)
