The divorce rate has soared in Buleleng, Bali in the last six months, data released by Singaraja District Court revealed.
In the first semester of 2014, the court settled 148 divorce cases, while the combined number of divorce cases in the first and second semester of 2013 was 180.
'And there are still many cases awaiting a decision,' court head justice I Made Seraman said Thursday, suggesting that by the end of this year the number of divorces would far eclipse those of the previous year.
Seraman attributed the increase to the rising public awareness of a legal option to end a marriage.
'The public now want legal certainty and they are aware of legal options that they can pursue.'
He identified disagreements, infidelity, domestic violence and financial disputes as the four main causes of marriage dissolution. Infidelity ranked first.
'We have also encountered several cases in which one party petitioned for divorce after learning that his or her spouse had married again.'
