Malaysia Airlines is in uncharted territory following the disappearance of flight 370 in March with 239 people aboard, which was followed this week by the downing of another of its jetliners, carrying 298 people, over Ukraine.

Before the disasters, the carrier had among the worst financial performances of any airline. An even bigger question mark now hangs over the future of Malaysia Airlines, with its brand tied to two almost unfathomable tragedies.

The real issue for Malaysia Airlines is whether in people'€™s minds, this is a bad-luck airline. Something significant will need to happen for the brand to regain people'€™s trust.

If I know Malaysians, they will not allow their national carrier to disappear. They will decide during the emergency session of parliament on July 23 to pump in US$4 billion and install a new management team to try and revive the airline.

Malaysia'€™s ruling United Malays National Organization (UMNO) party will need to reassess its affirmative policy toward Malaysia Airlines and allow hiring based on meritocracy to rebuild the airline. There are many talented people in Malaysia who can take this airline back to glory, but they are turned off by the nepotism and political interference from UMNO.

The first thing that needs to go is the over-priced catering contract with a company allegedly belonging to former prime minister Abdullah Badawi.

The airline has a remarkably strong engineering division, including AIROD, although operations and flight management will need a revamp. My bet is that Malaysia Airlines will soar again.
