he National Police announced that 429 people had died in traffic accidents nationwide during this year's Idul Fitri holiday from July 22 to 31.
"This year, 429 people died in traffic accidents, 704 people experienced major injuries and 2,595 people sustained minor injuries," National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Boy Rafli Amar told kompas.com on Friday.
There were 186 traffic accidents on Thursday itself, in which 29 people died, 66 people experienced major injuries and 263 people were slightly injured.
There were 2,003 traffic accidents between July 22 and 30 this year, Boy said. A total of 1,401 accidents happened in priority I areas, which encompasses areas under the authority of the South Sumatra, Lampung, Banten, Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, East Java, Bali and South Sulawesi police.
Boy added that there had been 60,743 traffic violations between July 22 and 30: 26,413 were ticketed while the remaining 34,330 received a warning.
The National Police will continue to monitor Idul Fitri traffic until July 6. They have deployed 134,795 personnel in order to secure various routes nationwide. (fss)
