ommunity groups have created two online petitions rejecting the nomination of Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician Ribka Tjiptaning as health minister in the upcoming Cabinet of president-elect Joko Widodo.
Despite Ribka's experience as leader of the House of Representatives Commission IX on health and manpower, the petitions criticized controversial statements she made regarding doctors and AIDS patients.
Citing media reports, a group of doctors on petisionline.net, say Ribka was insensitive for saying doctors were worse than policemen because the first fine sick people while the latter ticket healthy ones.
'There are many competent, suitable people for this position,' the petition said, naming senior health officers in the ministry like Ali Ghufron Mukti, Akmal Taher and Tjandra Yoga Aditama.
Another petition, made by Shinte Galeshka, on change.org mentioned Ribka's controversial statement regarding the distribution of condoms by the ministry. Ribka said that it would be better to campaign for prevention, which, she said, could be done by teaching AIDS patients to throw away used toothpicks since they also spread the disease.
