erindra party deputy chairman Fadli Zon reported General Elections Commission (KPU) chairman Husni Kamil Malik to the National Police's Criminal Investigations Directorate (Bareskrim) on Monday for allegedly opening ballot boxes illegally.
'We should investigate this case because it can be classified as an abuse of authority,' he said as quoted by tribunnews.com.
He added that the ballot boxes should not have been opened before the first trial session of the election dispute, which was filed by the camp of Gerindra Party presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto on July 6.
However, after announcing the official vote count on July 22, the KPU instructed all Regional General Elections Commission's (KPUD) from across the archipelago to open the ballot boxes on July 25.
The KPU commissioner, Ferry Kurnia Rizkiyansyah, previously said that his commission had given the instruction to open the ballot boxes in order to strengthen evidence in response to the lawsuit filed by Prabowo's camp. His commission sought to acquire the A5 forms, which are documents that establish a voter's right to cast a ballots in districts where they are not residents, as evidence to be presented in court.
In addition to Bareskrim, the Gerindra campaign team previously reported the KPU to the Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) on the same charges in its continuing bid to mount a legal challenge to Prabowo's electoral defeat by Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle's (PDI-P) candidate Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo.
