President-elect launches transition office

P

resident-elect Joko '€œJokowi'€™ Widodo launched on Monday a transition office (Kantor Transisi) on Jl. Situbondo in Menteng, Central Jakarta.

Jokowi explained that the transition office would be used as a center for discussing and preparing measures needed to implement his campaign promises, including his much-publicized 9-point plan.

The 9-point plan allocates, on average, Rp 1.4 billion (US$117,474) in special aid funds for every village; it also seeks the revitalization of 5,000 traditional markets; the establishment of a fish auction; storage and processing facilities; improved education at Islamic boarding schools (pesantren); and increased welfare for teachers.

'€œAt this office, we will prepare all things, including strategic matters related to the 2015 state budget,'€ Jokowi said as quoted by antaranews.com.

He said that Rini Mariani Soemarmo, Megawati'€™s trade minister during the latter's term as president from 2001 to 2004, would lead the transition office. Rini will be helped by four deputies, including former University of Indonesia (UI) defense expert Andi Widjajanto, Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) deputy secretary-general Hasto Kristiyanto, Paramadina University rector Anies Baswedan and NasDem politician and Jokowi campaign team spokesperson Akbar Faizal.

He said that there was no guarantee that all the names appointed to the transition team would become ministers. (alz/nvn)
