he General Elections Commission (KPU) in Surabaya, East Java, was surrounded by police personnel on Wednesday as a precaution to prevent any violent measures by supporters of the losing Prabowo Subianto-Hatta Rajasa presidential ticket, who plan to demonstrate at the KPU gates.
Police in riot gear and two water cannons were stationed in front of the East Java KPU office in anticipation of potential rioting by the supporters.
The head of the East Java Prabowo-Hatta media campaign team, Hendro Subiantoro, said the supporters had no intention of rioting but were merely protesting the East Java KPU's alleged unprofessionalism when holding the presidential election in the region on July 9.
'This demonstration is also a show of solidarity for [Prabowo and Hatta], who are currently attending their election fraud case at the Constitutional Court today,' Hendro said as quoted by kompas.com.
According to Hendro, demonstrators would come from nearby regions such as Madura, Gresik, Lamongan and Mojokerto in road convoys. (dyl)
