Accused baby kidnapper faces 15 years in prison

P

rosecutors are seeking a 15 year prison term for Desi Ariani, 33, who is accused of kidnapping a newborn baby from Hasan Sadikin Hospital in Bandung, West Java, in March of this year.

'€œThat is the maximum sentence for violating Article 83 of Law No. 23/2002 on children protection,'€ prosecutor Mumuh said after the trial at Bandung District Court on Wednesday.

Mumuh said Desi would also be charged with violating Articles 328 and 330 of the Criminal Code on fleeing police and abducting underage children, respectively.

Desi stands accused of kidnapping Valencia, the child of Lasmaria Boru Manulang, 25, and Toni Manurung, 26, from the hospital on March 25, 2014.

According to the indictment read by prosecutors, Desi abducted the baby while Toni was accompanying Lasmania to the rest room. She took the baby to her dormitory and asked for help from Ega Gunawan, a pregnant woman living on the second floor.

Desi, who did not realize that the baby was wearing a hospital wristband, told Ega she had just delivered the baby on the street on her way home.

When Ega asked about the wristlet, which bore a name, Desi said that a woman who worked at Santosa Hospital had helped her deliver the baby and put the wristlet on the baby.

An undercover police officer arrived at the dormitory three days later, pretending to be collecting data on newborns.

Desi told the officer the same story, but when the officer pressed her more details, she fled and later jumped from the Pasteur-Surapati overpass, which is located not far from Hasan Sadikin Hospital.

Mumuh speculated that Desi kidnapped the baby to get her ex-husband'€™s attention, whom she married in June of 2013.

Desi was allegedly three-months pregnant before suffering a miscarriage in August following a traffic accident, but never informed her husband and continued to feign pregnancy.

Allegedly, Desi once took Ega'€™s obstretic sonography examination results and passed them off as her own in an attempt to convince her ex-husband that she was still pregnant.

Desi appeared calm during the trial, but claimed she had not yet fully recovered from her fall. She limped as she walked into the courtroom and had little to say to reporters.

Her lawyer, Yopi Gunawan, said his client would not file an objection regarding the charges, but denied that she had fled from the police.

'€œShe did not run away and [intentionally] jump from the overpass. She fainted and then fell down,'€ Yopi said.

Presiding judge Sihor Manalu said the trial would be adjourned until next Wednesday, when witness testimonies would begin.
