uthorities in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta, demolished on Wednesday 33 houses that had been constructed above waterways on Jl. Bekasi Raya in Pegangsaan Dua subdistrict.
Subdistrict head Didit Mulyadi said the houses were razed after their owners ignored several warnings sent to them by the local authority.
'The construction of the buildings violated Bylaw No. 8/2007 on public order and they have been demolished because they frequently cause inundations during the rainy season,' Didit said as quoted by beritajakarta.com.
Kelapa Gading district head Ahmad Ya'la said the illegal dwellings were demolished after an increasing number of complaints had come in from locals whose houses were repeatedly flooded during the rainy season due to the illegal houses above the waterways.
Sitorus, 45, who had lived in his house for many years, accepted the inevitable and did not resist the demolition.
He said he would look for a new place to stay, from where he could run a small business to support his family.
