 Eight injured during protests

E

ight people have been injured during a rally on Jl. Medan Merdeka Barat, Central Jakarta, as the Constitutional Court (MK) read out its verdict on the election dispute filed by the losing presidential pair Prabowo Subianto and Hatta Rajasa.

The Jakarta Police said the eight people were injured during a clash between security officers and Prabowo-Hatta supporters at the Arjuna Wiwaha statue (also known as the Horse Statue) near the court.

'€œSeven of the eight injured have been taken to the hospital,'€ Jakarta Police health department head Sr. Comr. Musyafak said as quoted by Antara on Thursday.

Among the injured protestors were a Jakarta Police officer and a Gerindra Party member.

Musyafak added that four injured protesters were taken to Tarakan Hospital in Central Jakarta. He added that the protesters were injured when the rally turned chaotic after the police used water cannon to disperse the unruly crowd and prevent anyone from breaking though the razor wire barricade blocking public access to Jl. Medan Merdeka Barat, where the court is located.

'€œNone was injured by the police or shot,'€ said Musyafak.

The Jakarta Police dispatched 3,500 personnel to secure the court on Thursday. To disperse the crowd, the police also used tear gas.

Musyafak denied a rumor that dozens of demonstrators had been rushed to Budi Kemuliaan Hospital in Central Jakarta due to injuries sustained in the clash. (dyl/ebf)
