Hadar Gumay praised as statesman

T

he Election Organization Ethics Council (DKPP) has voiced appreciation for the attitude of General Elections Commission (KPU) commissioner Hadar Nafis Gumay, who did not react to an allegation by a Prabowo Subianto-Hatta Rajasa campaign team member who said he had leaked presidential debate material to rival Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo-Jusuf Kalla'€™s campaign team.

'€œThe DKPP appreciates the ethical attitude of the defendant [Hadar], who did not carry out any legal action or any other form of retaliation in response to slander by the plaintiff [Arief Pouyono of Prabowo-Hatta team] and information sources who were presented as witnesses in the '€˜a quo'€™ case hearing,'€ DKPP judge panel member Valina Singka said as quoted by Antara in Jakarta on Thursday.

She said such an attitude showed Hadar'€™s integrity as a statesman. The DKPP considered the lawsuit filed by the plaintiff to have contained aspects that were aimed at distorting facts.

'€œEvidence presented by the defendant [Hadar] showed without a doubt that the plaintiff'€™s claims have no foundation. It has been proven that the defendant did not commit any ethical violations,'€ said Valina.

Responding to the ruling, Hadar conveyed his gratitude to the panel of judges for having made a just decision based on valid information and evidence.

'€œWe thank the DKPP. They slandered me. It'€™s not true that I leaked presidential debate material to a certain presidential candidate,'€ said Hadar.

The former University of Indonesia lecturer said he had also presented a written statement by a witness, Zainal Arifin Mochtar, the composer of the debate material who was also moderator of one of the debates, on the chronology of the debate preparations.

'€œHe knew very well how the debate material was arranged,'€ said Hadar.

Arief accused Hadar of having leaked debate material to Trimedya Panjaitan, one of Jokowi-Kalla campaign team members, in a meeting at a restaurant in Menteng, Central Jakarta. Arief, a Gerindra Party legislative candidate, was in the restaurant when the meeting took place.

Hadar denied that he had arranged the meeting with Trimedya. He said it was Trimedya who approached him to talk for several minutes. During the DKPP hearing, Hadar also brought CCTV footage from the restaurant. (ebf)
