Police deny shooting dead protester

T

he Jakarta Police have denied rumors that a protester was shot dead by police during a clash near the Constitutional Court (MK) building in Central Jakarta on Thursday.

Jakarta Police spokesperson Sr.Comr. Rikwanto said he had heard the rumor that one of the losing presidential ticket Prabowo Subianto-Hatta Rajasa supporters was shot dead during a clash between police and protesters that had erupted when the court was reading out its ruling on the 2014 presidential election dispute filed by the candidate pair on Thursday afternoon.

He stressed that the rumor was not true. In an increasingly tense situation, he said, it was normal to hear such rumors.

The police did, however, fire tear gas at Prabowo-Hatta supporters during a clash that had erupted.

'€œIn areas around the Arjuna Wijaya Statue [also known as the Horse statue] in Central Jakarta, police officers and protesters became tangled in a strained situation during which they pushed each other. This forced the police to fire tear gas. The situation was brought under control even though it was quite chaotic,'€ said Rikwanto as quoted by kompas.com.

In a separate statement, Rikwanto said the police had used proper procedure in handling protesters. '€œEveryone can see that we do not use firearms and bullets. We use water cannon and tear gas [to disperse the crowd],'€ he said in a statement aired by TVOne.

According to Rikwanto, the police arrested four protesters during the rally, three of whom were injured and rushed to Tarakan Hospital in Central Jakarta. (put/ebf)
