Comments on other issues: Jakarta may shut Uber over permit violation

The Jakarta Transportation Agency will prohibit premium taxi service Uber from operating because it has not been issued a permit, according to a city official.

Uber, which was launched in Jakarta on Aug. 13, provides services through a smartphone application that allows users to hire drivers for private rides or to arrange rideshares with other users.

Uber provides its users with luxury cars, such as the Toyota Camry, Toyota Alphard or the Mercedes Benz S-Class, among others.

According to Transportation Agency head Muhammad Akbar, his agency had not issued a permit for Uber, as the company had not asked for one. '€œIf they are operating, then they are operating illegally,'€ Akbar told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.

Your comments:

The fleet may end up comprising unsuitable drivers who have not gone through background checks and passengers will be put at risk. In Sydney, Australia, these drivers are subject to substantial fines of around US$2,500 that Uber, of course, offers to pay. One can only surmise that the end game is to pay its way.

The vast amount of money earned by drivers goes to Uber, while the drivers are also trying to maximize their income by forgoing vehicle maintenance as their vehicles aren'€™t subject to regular inspections.
Beware Indonesia.

This misperception is funny. In the US, Uber is just a ride-sharing software platform/app. The app makes it easy for drivers to pick up passengers, for a fee. In Indonesia, some enterprising people are using it as a way to '€œshare'€ luxury car rides.

This service seems to be no different than illegal ojek (motorcycle taxis) or those illegal taxis at the airport, or illegal van services offering rides between the city and the suburbs. The only difference is that this company uses luxury cars.

Wow, I didn'€™t realize Uber was operating here '€” will have to check it out.

Just do a quick web search, other cities around the world have banned Uber for similar reasons. In some cases the company chose to ignore the ban and continued to operate. Uber drivers in various cities worldwide have also been accused by their passengers of, among other things, assault and rape. The city should definitely look into this company to protect Jakartans.
