Global Media Forum opens in Bali

A

global media forum aimed at contributing to the ongoing international debate about the importance of media, information and communication technologies for peace and sustainable development kicked off in Bali on Tuesday.

The three-day forum, titled '€œThe role of media in realizing the future we want for all'€, will adopt the Bali Roadmap for media and development, which will include recommendations on both media development and media as means of generating development.

The roadmap will also be included in the post-2015 Sustainable Development Agenda formulated by the United Nations.

'€œThis forum comes at a critical moment in the design of the post-2015 development agenda, and I believe that the discussions in Bali from Aug. 25 to 28 will generate a new momentum to the effort of to give media a prominent role in shaping the future we want for all,'€ United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Jakarta office director Hubert Gijzen said in his opening speech at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center.

Communication and Information Technologies Minister Tifatul Sembiring opened the forum with a speech.

The forum will feature several notable speakers, such as Al Jazeera English international broadcaster Femi Oke, Indonesian Press Council chief Bagir Manan and The Jakarta Post senior editor Endy Bayuni.
