resident Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has said that he expects Indonesia willsoon have world-standard media outlets that can compete head-onwith other global broadcasters like CNN, the BBC and Al Jazeera, which have become leaders in the broadcast-news industry.
Yudhoyono added that even though domestic media outlets would be reporting in the Indonesian language, given the country's vast and talented resources, he said he believed that home-grown channels could stand out against the competition.
'We must not lose the competition. We have all the talented resources we need,' Yudhoyono said in an address Tuesday to the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission's (KPI) annual meeting, held at the State Palace, as quoted by Antara.
The President added that he always made time to catch up on world news from several world-leading channels and would, therefore, feel very proud if the country also had its own global channel to communicate with the rest of the world.
Yudhoyono said he also hoped that the KPI would protect the public airwaves to ensure they were used only in the public's interest.(dyl)
