4 Turks, 3 locals arrested in C. Sulawesi

P

olice officers from the National Police'€™s Densus 88 counterterrorism squad and Parigi Moutong Police arrested on Saturday afternoon seven people, including four Turkish nationals, suspected to have ties to the Islamic State (IS) organization.

Parigi Moutong Police deputy chief Comr. Sirajuddin Ramli confirmed the arrests, though declined to furnish further details.

"The four Turks have been transferred to the Central Sulawesi Police headquarters in Palu," he told The Jakarta Post over the phone when contacted from Palu, the capital of Central Sulawesi.

The four other suspects are from Palu.

According to information from the Central Sulawesi Police, the arrests followed a tip-off from Densus 88 in Palu to Parigi Moutong Police that there were suspected IS members due to travel to Poso early on Saturday morning, passing through Parigi.

Parigi Moutong Police then set up a security checkpoint in front of its headquarters at about 1 a.m. Saturday (midnight Jakarta time). Officers spotted a minibus making a U-turn before accelerating away.

Policemen chased the minibus as far as Marantale village, Ampibabo district, where it stopped in front of a sawmill. Three people were immediately arrested while four others fled into the surrounding forest.

A manhunt was organized and the remaining four were arrested at about 4 p.m. local time. The police confiscated four Turkish passports but declined to reveal the identities of the arrestees.

The Central Sulawesi Police are now handling the investigation. (nvn)
