Thick smog covers Jambi, schools closed

T

he Jambi Environmental Management Board (BLHID) has announced thatthe air quality in Jambi is poor and not of a safe enough standard for local residents.

'€œAccording to our manual calculations, the air pollutant standards index in Jambi has risen above 100. This figure indicates poor air quality,'€ head of BLHID'€™s Jambi branch Rosmeli said on Thursday.

Governor Hasan Basri Agus said he shared the same concerns, saying that the administration would go all out to eradicate the smog.

'€œThe air quality is very bad. Therefore, we have temporarily stopped all schooling activities,'€ he said, adding that the administration had also distributed face masks to everyone in the local population.

He said his administration was also coordinating with the Jambi Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPD) to implement cloud seeding over hot spots throughout the province.

According to the Terra and Aqua weather satellites, there are 17 hot spots in the province, down from the previous number of 67. However, the wind, which is blowing from the south, has contributed to the poor air quality in Jambi as 165 hot spots have been recorded in South Sumatra province.(dic)
