Disgraced prosecutor file case review

J

AKARTA: Graft convict Urip Tri Gunawan has filed for a case review of the 20-year sentence handed down by the Supreme Court. In his statement, Urip said that the current sentence was too severe.

'€œIt is expected that the panel of justices will revoke the current sentence and declare me innocent of all charges,'€ Urip told the court on Thursday.

Urip added that there had been a huge difference in how the court treated him and Arthalyta Suryani, a businesswoman who went to prison after being found guilty of bribing Urip.

'€œArthalyta only received five years in prison, while I, on the other hand, got 20 years. We should have got the same sentence as we were charged with the same crime,'€ he said.

The Supreme Court had earlier sentenced Urip to 20 years in prison and fined him Rp 500 million (US$41,700), with an additional year in prison should he fail to pay the fine. Urip was proven to have received $600,000 in bribes from Arthalyta in 2008.

Justice Artidjo Alkostar of the Supreme Court said earlier that Urip'€™s crime deserved heavier punishment because he had violated the law in his position as a law enforcement official.
