atam city administration and state oil and gas companyPT Pertamina have handed down suspensions to employees suspected of involvementin a ring smuggling subsidized fuel from Riau Islands into the internationalblack market.

The suspects are Niwen Khairani, a low-ranking civil servant in Batam, Riau Islands, oil transportation businessman Achmad Mahbub, who is Niwen'€™s brother, Yusri, a senior supervisor at Pertamina'€™s Tanjung Uban plant in Bintan, Riau Islands, and Arifin and Dudun, two honor employees of the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL).

'€œWe have imposed a sanction on him [Yusri] in the form of a salary cut. If he is proven guilty in court, he will face instant dismissal,'€ Pertamina'€™s vice president for corporate communications Ali Mudakir told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Batam city'€™s Employment Agency head M. Sahir said Niwen'€™s office, the Batam City Investment Board, had filed a proposal to fire Niwen. He added that his office would wait for the results of the legal process before terminating her job.

'€œCurrently, her sanction is temporary dismissal,'€ he said.

The smuggling ring was unmasked after the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (PPATK) reported that Niwen had logged banking transactions worth Rp 1.3 trillion (US$110.3 million) between 2008 and 2013.
