Jakarta and Fiji team up on fire management

The Jakarta Administration is set to begin cooperation with the Republic of Fiji in the field of firefighting and disaster management.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in Jakarta on Monday between Deputy Jakarta Governor Basuki '€œAhok'€ Tjahaja Purnama and Fijian National Fire Authority (NFA) chairman Francis Kean, in what Ahok sees as an improvement in relations between the two nations.

'€œWe welcome this cooperation because it is in line with Indonesia'€™s aim to improve bilateral ties with developing Pacific nations such as Fiji. We hope that the cooperation will not stop at disaster management but can also branch out to other sectors,'€ Ahok said as quoted by Antara news agency.

He also expressed his hope that the agreement would improve disaster management in both nations, noting that Jakarta experienced more fires than any other province in Indonesia.

Kean explained that the agreement was forged due to the Jakarta Fire Department'€™s reputation for competence in terms of its human resources and its supporting facilities.

'€œFor that reason, we are glad to cooperate with the Jakarta administration and to share our experience,'€ Francis said.

Head of the Jakarta Fire and Disaster Mitigation Agency Subedjo added that an NFA delegation had in 2012 visited Jakarta and observed its firefighting facilities.

Under the new agreement, both parties will commence fire rescue training programs held by the Jakarta Fire Department.(dyl/nfo)(++++)
