he Jakarta Education Agency head Lasro Marbun has said his agency will merge 685 elementary schools across the capital in a bid to cut the city's education costs.
He said that the merger scheme would reduce the number of elementary schools from 2,113 to 1,428.
The merger process will be carried out in stages from 2014 to 2018. This year alone, the agency planned to merge 104 schools, he said.
The city administration could save up to Rp 4 billion (US$ 333,611) a year if the scheme was implemented, said Lasro, who has successfully cut Rp 2 trillion in costs since he replaced Taufik Yudi Mulyanto as agency head in February.
'We are still awaiting a gubernatorial regulation on the merger of elementary schools,' Larso said on Monday as quoted by tempo.co.
He was optimistic that the mergers would not cause problems for teachers and students. (alz/nfo)(++++)
