The city administration is set to merge up to 685 public elementary schools in Jakarta, cutting their number from 2,113 to 1,428.
Jakarta Education Agency head Lasro Marbun said that the plan would be carried out in stages from 2014 to 2018.
'We will reorganize the schools starting today. We are preparing the gubernatorial decree,' Lasro told reporters after a leadership meeting on Monday.
He explained that the program aimed to boost cost efficiency. According to Lasro, when enacted, the plan could save the city at least Rp 4 billion (US$333,611).
'By cutting principals' allowances, for example, we can save another Rp 685 million per month,' he said.
Another goal of the program is to restructure civil servants in the education sector.
'The merger plan will ease our management burden. For example, we had six principals for six schools sharing one building. Following the merger, only two principals will remain,' he said.
This year, the agency will start by merging 104 schools, because 104 principals were retiring this year, Lasro said.
