he Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) has urged the incoming Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo-Jusuf Kalla government to pay more attention to the institute's infrastructure so as to improve the country's research facilities before the advent of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015.
'There are many research projects that have been conducted by LIPI researchers that have not been published due to the government's minimal efforts to improve our infrastructure,' LIPI chairman Lukman Hakim told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.
He added that the institute's research infrastructure was still far less than what was needed for optimum results.
He said the nation needed to have decent research infrastructure to compete with other ASEAN member states in order to increase the quality of local goods.
Meanwhile, LIPI chemical research center head Agus Haryono said that the institute's new chemical metrology building at the Science and Technology Development and Research Center (Puspitek) in Serpong, Banten, which was launched on Tuesday morning, was part of the effort to improve the quality of LIPI chemical research department's infrastructure.
However, Agus admitted that the building still lacked adequate facilities, such as a two-story laboratory, a meeting room, a parking area and a prayer room.
'We are hoping to construct another building in 2015. This building is just a start toward improving the infrastructure of the institution -- we only have basic facilities here,' he said.
He added that the laboratory in the newly opened building was used for electrochemical and gas research, as well as organic and non-organic chemicals study. (dyl/nfo)(++++)
