Woman files report against controversial clinic

A

woman has filed a report with the Jakarta Police against three doctors who work for the Metropole Clinic in West Jakarta for alleged malpractice.

Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto told reporters on Monday that the woman, Elda Deviana, reported on Saturday that she suffered from physical and psychological injuries stemming from two operations she was allegedly forced into undergoing in November of last year.

'€œThe victim went to the clinic after she experienced menstrual problems. The doctors told her that she had inflammation of the cervix and needed to be operated on four days later or risk getting cancer,'€ Rikwanto said.

According to Elda'€™s report, doctors told her that the operation had failed and that she would have to undergo a second procedure. Three days after the first, Elda underwent another operation without her husband'€™s knowledge, Rikwanto said.

'€œThis time, doctors chose not to provide any anesthesia and she fainted halfway through the procedure,'€ he said, adding that the two operations cost Elda Rp 25 million (US$2,088).

After the second operation, Elda suffered a hemorrhage and was rushed to Budi Kemuliaan Hospital in Central Jakarta. The doctor at Budi Kemuliaan told her she would have been fine without either of the operations.

Rikwanto said police would first need to verify whether or not the doctors at Metropole were certified.

He added that the doctors could face a maximum prison sentence of one year or face a fine of Rp 50 million if they were found to have fallen short of the professional and procedural standards required for practicing medical professionals under Article 79 of the 2004 Medical Practice Law.

According to netizens of the online community, Kaskus, the Metropole Clinic is no stranger no controversy. The group currently maintains a 146-page comment thread listing various complaints and experiences by patients who were treated at the clinic.

Many reported that Metropole doctors had diagnosed them with illnesses requiring immediate and expensive treatment, but after receiving the medical care, they were worse off and forced to seek additional medical attention. Many Kaskus members also alleged that doctors at the clinic were foreigners who could speak neither English nor Indonesian and needed interpreters.

Health Agency head Dien Emmawati said that her agency revoked the Metropole Clinic'€™s permit in August after discovering that the clinic offered inpatient services.

'€œThe owners did not have the right permit to treat inpatients,'€ she said last Wednesday as reported by kompas.com. (fss)
