Students sent on vacation due to haze

T

he Jambi administration has let early childhood education program (PAUD) and kindergarten students off school as haze from forest fires blanketing the city has continued to worsen.

Jambi regional secretary Daru Pratomo said the kindergarten and PAUD students were given a two-day vacation starting from Tuesday.

'€œBased on instructions from Jambi Deputy Mayor Abdullah Sani, we decided to give kindergarten and PAUD students a vacation. We have instructed the Education Agency to implement the order,'€ said Daru on Tuesday.

He went on to say that it was probable that the administration would also let elementary school students off on vacation if the haze got worse.

Jambi'€™s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency'€™s (BMKG) head of data, Kurnia Ningsih, said that as of Tuesday, 25 fire spots were detected in areas across Jambi. Of the total, 17 fire spots were in Sarolangun, followed by Muarojambi (three), Batanghari (two), and Merangin, East Tanjungjabung and West Tanjungjabung with one fire spot each.

'€œThe haze is mostly from South Sumatra, to the southeast of Jambi. However, Jambi is still in the dry season so it could potentially contribute to haze in those areas,'€ said Kurnia.

Yussvinoza, head of the pollution control division at the Jambi Environment Agency (BLHD), said the Air Pollution Standard Index (ISPU) level in Jambi City was detected at the level of 115 as of Tuesday.

'€œIt means that air pollution in Jambi has been categorized as hazardous to health,'€ said Yussvinoza. (ebf)(++++)
