AKARTA: Unlike last year, the management of the Istiqlal Grand Mosque will no longer directly distribute sacrificial meat from the mosque, located in Central Jakarta, to avoid chaos during the celebration of Idul Adha, which is slated for Sunday.
Istiqlal spokesperson Abu Hurairah Abdul Salam said on Friday that the management did not distribute coupons to low-income families to be exchanged for meat anymore.
'We will distribute the meat to nearby districts like Sawah Besar and Gambir [both in Central Jakarta],' he said, as quoted by wartakotalive.com.
Abu Hurairah said the decision was taken after evaluating last's year program and in order to avoid the chaos that usually occurred during the distribution.
'We do not want to repeat the mistake,' he said, adding that the chaos sometimes even claimed lives.
According to Abu Hurairah, as of Friday Istiqlal had received 30 head of cattle and Rp 50 million (US$4,143) in cash that would be used to buy goats.
The mosque will still receive sacrificial livestock up until Saturday.
