A housemaid and her 4-year-old child died Thursday in a fire that ravaged seven houses in Sumur Batu in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta.

'€œThe fire destroyed seven houses and claimed two lives. The Central Jakarta Fire and Natural Disaster Agency deployed 18 fire trucks to tackle the blaze,'€ Kemayoran Police chief Comr. Suyud said on Friday.

The fire was extinguished within one hour, he added.

Suyud explained that the two victims were sleeping when their house caught fire. Their bodies were taken straight to the Cipto Mangunkusumo General hospital (RSCM) in Salemba, Central Jakarta, for postmortem examinations.

'€œWe are still investigating the cause of the fire,'€ Suyud added.
