TV stations condemned for airing celebrity weddings

T

elevision watchdog Remotivi has condemned the trend of television channels airing the wedding receptions of celebrities. The watchdog believes private events are not suitable for public viewing.

Remotivi director Roy Thaniago said that the airing of the wedding ceremony of Raffi Ahmad and Nagita Slavina Tengker by Trans TV from Oct. 16 to Oct. 17 for 14 hours each day through a live program entitled '€œMenuju Janji Suci'€ (To the Sacred Vows) could not be justified as it violated the public'€™s right to enjoy good programming.

'€œWhat we see on television is the misuse of public frequencies by television stations ['€¦] such abuses have occurred many times,'€ Roy said on Friday.

He recalled a similar instance when RCTI aired the wedding party of pop singers Anang Hermansyah and Ashanti when the two tied the knot in Jember, East Java. Through a program entitled '€œJodohku'€ (My Soulmate), Anang'€™s second wedding was aired for three hours on May 20, 2012.

RCTI also aired on July 6 '€œNgunduh Mantu'€ (introducing the daughter-in-law to the groom'€™s neighborhood), in which Ashanty visited Anang'€™s hometown in Jember.

Actor and presenter Andhika Pratama, who married Ussy Sulistyowati on Jan. 21, 2012, had his wedding covered on two of SCTV'€™s shows, '€œInBox'€, which he co-hosts, and '€œHot Shot'€.

Roy explained that the programs contravened broadcasting standards that were regulated by the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI).
