Putin eyes possible meeting with Jokowi: Envoy

R

ussian president Vladimir Putin is exploring the possibility of a meeting with Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo, the seventh Indonesian president, who was sworn in on Monday, an envoy said.

Russian Trade and Industry Minister Denis Manturov said he had conveyed messages from Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding future relations between the two countries.

He said President Putin hoped that under the new administration, Russia and Indonesia could forge stronger bilateral ties.

'€œWe also expect that the two leaders can meet in the near future to discuss bilateral cooperation in various fields,'€ Manturov said as quoted by Antara news agency in Jakarta on Monday.

Manturov represented the Russian government in the Jokowi-Kalla swearing-in ceremony in a plenary session at the People'€™s Consultative Agency (MPR) on Monday.

He praised the ceremony, which he deemed to have been carried out smoothly and safely.

'€œThe inauguration is an amazing event. It'€™s an honor for us to [have been] able to attend the ceremony,'€ he said.

Manturov said it was hoped that Indonesia and Russia would develop stronger cooperation in various sectors, including economy and trade, and that the trade volume between the two countries could continue to increase.

Manturov said Russia was particularly interested in developing its metallurgy industry in Indonesia, which would enable the transfer of the country'€™s metallurgy technology to Indonesian counterparts.

'€œWe [Russia] are interested in developing the metallurgy industry because we see opportunities to benefit Russia'€™s technological capacity in the field of metallurgy in Indonesia,'€ he said. (ebf)(++++)
