Jambi cooperatives set to fail by year-end

A

s many as 147 of the 257 cooperatives in Batanghari regency, Jambi, will be inoperative by the end of the year due to mismanagement, a local official has said.

The reasons for the lack of activity at the cooperatives include a lack of capital and memberships that do not meet the necessary standards for sound cooperatives. Only 110 of the total number of cooperatives in the province are still active.

The Batanghari Industry, Trade and Cooperatives Agency'€™s cooperatives affairs head, M. Kamil, said several conditions and procedures had to be met to form a cooperative and become a legal entity.

He added that cooperatives needed to be responsible in terms of management and membership.

'€œThe agency does not interfere with the management of a cooperative, because each cooperative is its own legal body,'€ Kamil said on Monday.
