Central Java hit by blackout

R

esidents in a number of areas across Central Java and Yogyakarta were hit by power outage from 5:30 p.m. on Monday as they watched the post-inauguration celebrations for President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla on television.

'€œI felt sad as I read Twitter posts from disappointed residents who complained to me about the power outage. A great many people were watching the inaugural coverage on TV,'€ Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo said in a keynote speech Monday evening during a thanksgiving party at Lapangan Pancasila Square in Simpang Lima, Semarang, Central Java.

The blackouts were caused by a short-circuit in Ungaran, Semarang regency, as a result of a faulty transformer at the main power substation in Ungaran after being hit by lightning.

When reached by phone, the spokesman for the Banyumas office of state power company PT PLN, Tri Elok Pribadi, said the blackouts had been caused by a disturbance at Ungaran'€™s main power substation.

The power outage affected areas including Banjarnegara, Purbalingga, Banyumas, Cilacap, Kebumen, Tegal, western Semarang, Purworejo, Brebes and Yogyakarta.
