Child sexual violence cases on the rise

T

he Jambi City Police'€™s Women and Children Protection (PPA) unit has recorded 31 cases of sexual violence against minors so far this year.

'€œBased on PPA data, between January and October 2014, there were 31 reports of sexual abuse against children,'€ Jambi City Police chief Sr. Comr. Kristono said on Tuesday, adding that such cases were caused by a variety of factors.

According to him, freedom of information and lax parental supervision are the primary contributors to the problem.

Head of the child protection division at the Jambi Community and Women'€™s Empowerment Agency, Agus Santoso, said 125 cases of sexual violence against children had been recorded in 2013.

This year, he added, his agency had not yet compiled overall data that incorporated figures from all the regencies and cities in Jambi province.

'€œWe have not yet compiled the complete data as we did in 2013, but I predict the number [of cases] will rise,'€ Agus said.
