When Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo takes his oath of office as Indonesia's seventh president on Monday Oct. 20, it will be a testament to the peaceful and orderly succession of the country's leadership.
It will also be a testament to the fact that electoral democracy works.
This, more than anything, is probably the most important legacy, yet underappreciated, of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY)'s 10 years as Indonesia's president. (By Endy Bayuni, Jakarta)
Your comments:
I disagree with this opinion. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono clearly failed in leading this country. He was an opportunist.
How can you say that he kept democracy intact? Clearly he could not manage to resolve the religious conflicts in Indonesia.
He was a weak leader, but lucky enough to have (some) policy advisors and a spokesperson, Wimar Witoelar clearly did a great job with SBY's official statements and public image.
He could not work with his governors and his policies were mainly focused on the development of Java ' not developing ideas of welfare distribution to other islands.
And again, it was his job to make sure all citizens had equal access to welfare, education and health. And he did not do well.
We paid him with our tax money ' public money.
People deserve a leader who will work hard for all Indonesians, not just people in Java.
